Meet The Artist

Artist Origin: Canadian
Artist Type: Québec Modernist; Painter; Illustrator; Printmaker; Sculptor; Costume and Set Designer; Founder of the Prisme d’Yeux group.
Born: May 16, 1906, Québec City, Québec.
Died: November 14, 1988, Laval, Québec.

Alfred Pellan was one of the most influential and independent voices in Québec modernism. Born in Québec City, he travelled to Paris in 1926 on a scholarship from the Québec government, where he encountered the work of Picasso, Matisse, Miró and the European avant-garde. After returning to Canada in 1940, Pellan challenged the conventions of academic painting and advocated for greater artistic freedom. His vibrant, imaginative compositions moved freely between figuration, Surrealism and abstraction, distinguished by brilliant colour, rhythmic forms and a deeply personal visual vocabulary. In 1948, he founded the Prisme d’Yeux group, offering an alternative to the Automatist movement and helping establish Montréal as a centre of modern art. Pellan’s influence extended across painting, drawing, illustration, theatre, costume and set design, securing his place as a defining figure in the evolution of modern Canadian art.
