Originally from Bosnia and Hercegovina, Marija Barac holds a first degree in Surveying Engineering from the University of Zagreb. In Canada she pursued fine arts studies with Graham Coughtry, Rae Johnson, Mario Polidori and Gordon Rayner at OCAD. Since graduating in 1996, Marija has had many solo and group exhibitions and has since worked as a free lance artist, and part time art instructor. Barac is a founder of the Propeller Gallery collective.
Marija’s paintings can be found in the collections of Peter Munk of Horsham Coorporation, Weinberg and Gaspirc, Essential Communications and others.
Working in multiple series, Barac in one moment paints luscious swathes using the energy experienced while walking the Scarborough bluffs; in the next a sublime body of luminous glazed work related to memory and local habitats. Relationality is a constant theme in this very painterly work.
