Clara Sophia Hagarty

Clara Sophia Hagarty (1871–1958) was a pioneering Canadian artist, educator, and advocate whose influence extended well beyond her own paintings. Best known for her luminous landscapes and floral subjects, she trained in Toronto before continuing her studies in Paris and Italy, where she embraced Impressionist approaches to colour and light. As a founding member and the first woman president of the Ontario Society of Artists, Hagarty played a vital role in advancing opportunities for Canadian artists and shaping the country’s artistic institutions. Her work reflects a refined sensitivity to atmosphere, making her an important figure in the development of Canadian Impressionism.
