Maurice Cullen (1866–1934) was one of Canada’s foremost Impressionist painters and a pioneering interpreter of the Canadian winter landscape. Trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, he embraced French Impressionism before returning to Montréal, where he adapted its luminous palette and broken brushwork to the unique qualities of Canadian light and snow. His expressive plein air paintings transformed winter into a subject of extraordinary vitality, establishing a legacy that profoundly influenced subsequent generations of Canadian landscape painters, including the Group of Seven.
