Artist in attendance

Rather than waiting until we are able to mount a full solo exhibition, we were excited to get these new Atticus works on the walls! Lots of our visitors have been asking to see more, and this summer produced a compelling suite of works in the studio.

Zach is a realist painter whose work is deeply concerned with mood. His nocturnal views of the city use intense artificial light, shadow and atmosphere to transform familiar urban spaces into something quieter and more contemplative. There is an intriguing tension in his paintings between isolation and peace, with moments that can feel eerie, nostalgic and unexpectedly beautiful.

We are excited to feature contemporary artists like Zach alongside the historical masters we represent—artists whom we believe carry forward a shared ambition: technique, individuality and a desire to make images that are both distinctly their own and genuinely compelling.

Zach Atticus

Zach Atticus (b. 1992) is a Toronto-based realist painter whose work uses light, colour, and atmosphere to create contemplative scenes of solitude and stillness. After graduating from OCAD University, majoring in illustration in 2015, he switched his focus towards oil painting. He joined his first residency at MOCA (2019–20). Leaving during the pandemic, he developed a series of paintings that captured Toronto’s eerie calm, balancing emotional tension with peace. Since 2024, Atticus has completed a pair of residencies and exhibitions at the Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland, broadening his exploration of landscape and technique, while continuing a pursuit of mood and atmosphere in representational painting.
