The String paintings remain one of the most recognized and important periods of Nakamura’s practice. These strikingly minimalist works were produced by applying strings to a board, covering the surface with a coloured ground, and then wiping away the excess. The result is a powerful meditation on geometry, form, line and colour recognized by curators and collectors across the country. The unique and singular voice that comes through the broad range of Nakamura’s production reflects an artist not bound by trends of the time. A member of the important Painters Eleven group, his work was rooted in a search for universal order.
