John Young Johnstone was a gifted Canadian painter whose career, though tragically brief, contributed significantly to the development of modernist painting in Montréal. Trained at the Art Association of Montreal and later in Europe, he absorbed the influence of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, bringing a fresh sensitivity to colour, atmosphere, and structure into his landscapes and figure compositions. A member of the Beaver Hall Group, Johnstone was part of a generation of Montréal artists who challenged academic traditions and expanded the possibilities of Canadian painting. His refined handling of light and form continues to attract collectors interested in early Canadian modernism.
