Ethel Seath (1879–1963) was a graceful yet resilient figure in Montreal’s early modernist circle. Emerging from modest beginnings, she spent two decades as a commercial illustrator before devoting over forty years to teaching at The Study, a private girls’ school. A founding member of the Beaver Hall Group and later the Canadian Group of Painters, Seath balanced her roles as educator and artist with a gentle determination. Her richly composed still lifes, architectural scenes, and serene landscapes reflect both her disciplined design sense and her emotional sensitivity — always rooted in colour, structure, and thoughtful abstraction.
